Bringing a virtual world of film and gaming before you was Sega's vision in the early 90s

In 1991 Sega ventured into new territory with the vision of Rick Dyer

When you think back to the arcades over 20 years ago you might wonder how we ever put up with the basic graphics and early technology compared to the games of today. You could argue that it was the dedicated cabinets that made the difference rather than the graphics and experience anyway.

But in 1991 Sega ventured into new territory with the vision of Rick Dyer, designer of the infamous yet groundbreaking arcade classic Dragons Lair. Virtual image productions developed Time Traveller with the weight of early 90s publisher Sega behind them. So what was this all about that made it so different.

One word..Hologram!

It was the World's first holographic video game using a dedicated cabinet that projects the games cabinets using a refraction effect and mirrors to give the sense of a 3D world the characters live in. Similar to Dragons Lair, the actual gameplay and movement is basic yet very difficult to master with progression through the game being made by making the right moves. A simple up down left and right and action to jump, fire and sprint your away around the imaginery 3D world. Not only was holographic technology used in the cabinet to create the illusion - the actors (about 40 in total) were filmed on a green screen too.

The gameplay and story was pretty straightforward and closely linked to the name - Time Traveler with a total of seven themes or "time periods". Levels included pre-historic, Middle Ages and the future.

The cabinet itself was quite a centrepiece in the arcades of its time too - a top down view centred around a huge CRT TV and curved mirror. The unit was white which stood out from the coloured or black arcade cabinets of the time. A Playstation 2 version of the game was released on DVD back in 2001 too (which we have at gamesyouloved!) but it couldn't replicate the big, emcompassing arcade experience of the time.
