I used to play this game at the arcade at Aladdin's Castle that was at the mall, I had the ColecoVision version of this game and when my parents saw how much I loved this game, so they got me the ColecoVision & "portable" version for Christmas.

Those fuel tanks were guarded by lazer gun batteries, missle batteries, and enemy ships. Sound tough?

The game is good and plays much like the arcade game, with the graphics. I saw this game on Ebay for $10 dollars and if you have ColecoVision this is a must have. The portable version was pretty much the same, having to peer into a box to see what was going on.

The game will hold up well as it becomes harder and harder the further you go into it. The real difficulty of the game is if you don't get how to use the height of your ship seeing how that pretty much what kills you 95% of the time 5% random missle or ship. Your mission is to take lone ship to a Asteroid City, there is a evil robot Zaxxon with plans to construct a misssle to destroy your home planet, Destroy Zaxxon, you save your planet and of course the universe.

Zaxxon is an arcade shooter developed by Ikegami Tsushinki in 1982 becoming the first isometric shooter.  Well the game is a essentially a  side side scroller that happened to run diagonally so it would give the appearance of a 3D game from a 3rd person viewpoint, also being one of the first games to display shadows. On the left side you had a height meter, as you rise and fall of the ship's shadow would become smaller or bigger depending on your altitude. On the bottom of the screen is a fuel meter, when you run out of fuel you died, so to refuel up during the game you had to shoot fuel tanks.

These fuel tanks were guarded by lazer gun batteries, missle batteries, and enemy ships. Sound tough? Well there also the matter of getting your small ship in between a small gap in a blockade that had shields on it if you didn't have the right height you would die.  Then you had a phase of enemy ships that would attack and would give you a attempt to get a bonus, if all enemy ships were destroyed you get a bonus of 1000 points. You would then continue this attack on Zaxxon's Asteroid City till you faced Zaxxon himself, the evil robot; he was susceptible to attack on his mounted missile weapon.

I grew up in a small town in a trailer court where the manager's office had Asteroids and Galaga. In the town we had a Minute Mart and 2 pizza places that all had arcade games. The city of Vancouver next to us had a mall with Aladdin's Castle. The major city Portland at Jantzen Beach Mall had arcade there as well. In Hazel Dell, my mother friend's son lived next to the batting cages which had arcade there. So arcades were everywhere, so many good games came out that year. Back then you could put your quarters up and make friends with that person that was playing.
