When I originally played Pac Man 2, I was expecting a Pac-Man platformer or even an entirely new set of mazes, but instead it contained a different kind of game than I was used to.

Becoming Super Pac-Man can improve his mood

Over the years, critics and commentators have all but completely written this game off as terrible and the opposite of fun to play. However, I tend to disagree. I consider it an underrated gem of the 90's 16-bit era. In Pac-Man 2, rather than moving Pac through mazes, players are tasked with guiding Pac-Man through a couple different settings in search of particular items. In one mission, he's out to get flowers for a neighborhood girl, and in another he'll be looking for milk to quiet down Pac-Baby.

Players help navigate Pac-Man by using a slingshot and shouting out command such as 'Look!' and in some segments, 'Higher!' or 'Faster!' Along the way, players find items such as ID cards (which are used for the end of the game) and Pac-Man cartridge pieces, which allow players to unlock Ms. Pac-Man at the arcade, though Pac-Man is already playable there anytime.

It's also the player's job to keep Pac-Man in a good mood. Sometimes Pac-Man can get very upset, either angry or sad. Once he's in these moods, he can either do something very stupid that can get him hurt, or he'll ignore the ghosts until he pretty much breaks down.

Speaking of, what's a Pac-Man game without the ghosts? All of the ghosts appear to cause Pac-Man trouble. In order to defeat them, Pac-Man must consume a Power Pellet (three can be carried at once) to become Super Pac-Man. Becoming Super Pac-Man can improve his mood too. I remember spending many hours after this came out figuring every last thing I could out. Pac-Man 2 used to kill lots of time! And I remembered friends having the Sega Genesis version of this, but the Super NES version beats it in my opinion because of the sound effects. They were down-right silly and put to good use! I guess that's one other thing that helps make Pac-Man 2 stand out 20 years later.
