Like many arcade games of this era, Phoenix is a top-down shooter. The player controls a spaceship (like a small X-wing) that moves horizontally at the bottom of the screen, firing upward. Enemies, were like birds diving down to destroy you!

Your ship is equipped with a shield that can be used to zap any of the alien creatures that attempt to crash into you. It has distinctive shooting sounds that have become very familiar to fans of the genre. More importantly, the Phoenix mothership was one of the first video games to have a end of level baddie to be presented as a separate challenge.

Richie Knucklez holds the official record for this game with 1,007,115 points recorded on the 9 March, 2011 which shows how popular the game is today still to play.
