The N64 is cited by many as being not only a system that performed well in it's own time as a fifth generation machine, but one of the best ever consoles. The games are legendary such as the mighty Goldeneye, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time and Star Fox 64.
It utlised an old skool cartridge set-up against many of the CD based consoles and computers at the time - but it didn't matter. Nintendo focused on what it did best - creating original games and characters for everyone to have great fun with and enjoy.
