True lies was an action shooter based on the Schwarzenegger film of the same name. It was released in 1994 for the SNES, Megadrive and Gameboy.
The music was suitably 90's, and the graphics were awesomeAs with the movie, you play as Harry Tasker, your mission being to stop the terrorist threat posed by Salim Abu Aziz. Presented in a top down view, you could move, shoot, switch weapons, strafe and roll to dodge enemy bullets. The strafing aspect was particularly cool, allowing you more accuracy with your shots.
In the first level, you can move freely undercover at a fancy dinner party. However, in true Schwarzenegger style, it doesn't take long before you're taking scores of enemies down with uzis, shotguns, grenades and flame throwers.
Most of the stages represented parts of the film, with missions similar to the movie settings. Running down an icy hill outside the mansion whilst armed men on skiis fly at you brings back great memories from the movie. A one off mission even lets you fly an attack plane on the way to the final showdown. Some levels don't really match up with the film, like when Harry goes to China, but who knows, maybe it was a deleted scene!
The music was suitably 90's, and the graphics were awesome, with the Schwarzenegger sprite capturing the likeness of Arnie well. The game's ending is also hilarious, staying true to film (You're fired!). Overall this game was awesome, proving early on that movie tie ins could be done well.
