Sonic the Hedgehog on the Megadrive/Genesis was not only the original, but also one of the best Sonic games ever created

Collect the rings or just go through the levels at super high speeds!!!
One of the initial launch titles for the Mega Drive/Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog started the ball rolling on a huge series of games that are still being released today, over 15 years later!

You play Sonic, a small blue Hedgehog that has the ability to run at super fast speeds, and curl up into a ball when jumping and running, to smash through obstacles and enemies.

Your nemesis is a big fat mad scientist called Dr. Robotnik, who has kidnapped all of your little cute woodland friends, and trapped them in robots that you can destroy on your way through the levels. The plot is that Dr. Robotnik is after a number of gems called the Chaos Emeralds to gain power over the land but Sonic can prevent him from getting them by winning bonus stages in the game.

You must also collect as many gold rings along the way, you can collect these while running through loops and jumping high into the air using springs! The rings give you points but also protect you from losing a life if you fall on the dangerous spikes on the ground! But if you land on the spikes you lose all your rings!!!!!!!

Sonic the Hedgehog is a big, bright, fun and addictive title that even now has the ability to make you want to play it if you see it running on screen, and how many games from your childhood can you say that about these days ??

For the first title in the series, which are often not the best, and for one of the very first titles to be released on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, we think it represents an outstanding piece of programming.
