I played Metal Gear Solid 2 briefly around the time of its release. I just got a taste for a sequel to a beloved game and never got to play it again until 2013 when I finally bought a PS2 for myself.
The gameplay, the graphics and the amazing directing still held up to this day.

Going back to this title more than 10 years after its release was surprising. The gameplay, the graphics and the amazing directing still held up to this day. MGS2 had and has some of the best graphics both technically and creatively. This was a time when style ruled over substance graphically and it made games fun and interesting to look at.
The mechanics and gameplay were tight and thrilling. The addition to the iron sight aiming never gets old and the story, though overly melodramatic, was well told with beautifully directed cut scenes and fun, sappy dialogue. Though I don't think MGS2 deserved the perfect scores it received upon its release.
My biggest complaint was Raiden, though he played the same as Snake, was far less compelling of a character than Snake and the ending to this game was very dissatisfying. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is still a fantastic, challenging, engaging, and entertaining game, even today.
2001 was the year I turned 21 so much of is fuzzy. I aspired to become the next big musician listening to bands like Doves, Pinback, Jimmy Eat World, and Something Corporate. I just had a PSone which overheated and only worked if turned upside down. 2001 was a time when gaming was still social and among friends where you didn't need a microphone to yell obscenities at them for KOing you. It was also a time of rentals. Virtually every game available to try for a time for $5.00. No fear of losing a 3rd of your paycheck on a bad game when you could take it for a test drive. RIP Blockbuster Video.
