Some games have a vibe that stay with you throughout your life and Fiendish Freddie on the Commodore C64 is one of those games.

Adjudicated by a bonkers set of clown judges who comically beat each other up!
Andy Foster

I, like many others, was first introduced to the game through the C64c hardware pack 'Playful Intelligence' on the game cartridge that was included. It also contained other classic games such as Klax, International Soccer and Flimbo's Quest.

You have to raise money to save a nasty cliché of a businessman from selling off the Circus and in order to do this you need to take part in six circus events. The six events are juggling, trapeze, knife throwing, tightrope, human cannonball and diving. All involve the usual joystick waggling and precision movements to complete the tasks in hand and are adjudicated by a bonkers set of clown judges who comically beat each other up before giving your performance a score. The cunning businessman has enlisted the help of Fiendish Freddie who pops up at various moment to sabotage your plans of a good score by trying to bump you off in countless gruesome ways. His attempts to hinder progress always cause you to panic and this sense of foreboding runs through the game.

The game is essentially a multi-event game similar to California Games but, with a much darker premise and a very big dose of dark English humor. Even though it has a big comedy draw there’s something slightly Stephen King about proceedings with some violent death scenes, music that still creeps me out, (even with its incessant jolly SID tones that annoyingly get repeated at every cut scene), and big bold graphics from various angles; resulting in a fantastically bizarre experience all round! Maybe it’s me, but this game always unsettles me... in a good way!
