Pirates! was one of those games that took ages to load on my Commodore 64, but every second of wait was rewarded by hours of intense gameplay.
Trade with merchants or steal their cargo!
No wonder this game was ported, ported again, remade, and remade again, recently in 3D, by Sid Meier himself.
A very complex game, pure Sid Meier's style. Starting with a small sloop and a few men in your crew, you go from port to port, recruit more men, buy or steal ships, befriend the English, the Dutch, the French or the Spanish, search for buried treasures, duel with enemy captains, collect bounties, plunder and sink the enemy's ship, or repair it and keep it to grow your fleet, attack hostile port cities, or sneak into them, trade with merchants or steal their cargo... and more!
I was a 9 years old kid when I got this game, and I lived very close to the port city where I was born. At that time I had two huge collections of trading cards: World Wrestling Federation (can you say Hulk Hogan? :) and sailing ships. The same year saw the appearance of the mini TV series "Treasure Island", an Italian/German space age sci-fi adaptation of Stevenson's novel, featuring Anthony Quinn as Long John Silver.
Good time! :)
