Cobra is not a movie lavish with comedy or whimsey. It's the story of a hard boiled killer with a thirst for justice.

Collecting burgers arms you with a pistol and the weapons continue to level up with each successive happy meal.

It's been a while since I've seen Cobra, and I'm struggling to recall the scene in the movie where Stallone's character jumps around on a scaffold, headbutting rocket-launcher toting baddies while eating burgers and leaping a series of lethal runaway prams.

Hollywood producers take note: I would pay to see that movie. It's safe to say that the ZX Spectrum game of Cobra based on the classic 80s movies isn't slavish in it's pursuit of authenticity to the source material, but it is nevertheless a very well polished title. It's laden with features that many other games simply wouldn't bother with.

You are aware from the moment you select 'Kempston' that you're playing a AAA title. The menu screen gives you the option to play in 'full colour' (or as close as the humble speccy could get) or monochrome. The in-game hud features several animated items which contribute nothing to the game, but certainly offer much to the overall quality of the title. The game itself is hard. Very hard.

Your three lives are scant and much practice and a dollop of luck is required to progress through the side-scrolling levels: particularly as you begin completely unarmed. You can choose to engage the enemies with the Glaswegian martial arts or simply dodge them. Collecting burgers arms you with a pistol and the weapons continue to level up with each successive happy meal.

The spectrum manages to drive the action at break-neck speed and handles a surprising number of sprites without any slowdown. Fans of twitch gaming or self flagellation will get a kick out of the steep learning curve. The high production values can only serve as a reward for enduring the stiff competition.
