Straight off the pages of the Eagle comic of the 1950s, Dan Dare, the British answer to Flash Gordon, continues to fight his arch enemy The Mekon on the micros of the 1980s.

Dan must fight his way through the many rooms
Andy Pryer

Planet Earth is being held to ransom and is threatened with destruction by a giant asteroid. When Dan and his sidekick Digby arrive at the rock to investigate, they find it hollow and converted to a huge spaceship crawling with the Mekon’s henchmen, which Dan, armed only with a laser gun, must infiltrate and sabotage to once again save the earth from certain destruction!

The game plays out inside the base where Dan must fight his way through the many rooms, collecting the five parts of an explosive device with which to destroy the enemy ship.

Acquiring one part will unlock the next section area.  The clock is ticking however and allowing yourself to be captured costs you precious time to escape and get back to where you were and the pesky lifts on the ship are unreliably maintained which doesn’t help either. The look of the game is faithful to the source material, there are plenty of nods for the fans and the graphical style nicely mirrors that of the comic book. All of which means that this game felt nicely retro even in 1986!
