Zxspectrum YoutubeEggs. Don't you just love them? Especially little smiley faced eggs named Dizzy with boxing gloves on and bright red shoes.

I was first introduced to the Dizzy franchise when I was around nine years old. I remember being fascinated and highly amused as to how an egg could somehow find itself in a land of magic, imaginatively known as Magicland. Oh but what a place it was!

This game is officially the fourth in the franchise but is technically the fifth game, following Dizzy three-and-a-half which was a lesser known prequel to Magicland itself. Our intrepid egg has to rescue his six clumsy Yolkfolk buddies from the previously defeated Evil Wizard Zaks, who has kindly placed all kinds of nasty magic spells upon them ranging from turning one in to a frog, to capturing another inside some sort of magic mirror thing.

The gameplay is the same as the other games in the franchise. Dizzy walks and flips from left to right, as you would expect and to be brutally honest, there's nothing new in terms of graphics or sound effects. Not that this is a bad thing of course. The sound effects especially have always been one of Dizzy's greatest attributes and if you're going to pick the game up then I suggest the ZX Spectrum version. It just feels smoother and much quicker compared to the Commodore 64 version which I later owned.

What grabs me most about this game is that even though it's nothing ground breaking, it still feels exciting. One of the great things about Dizzy is that its beauty lies in its simplicity. He's an egg. Simple as that.

This game is regarded by most to be the best of the bunch and I have to agree. It's also the last Dizzy game that I truly loved as I felt the franchise began to become repetitive in subsequent releases. If you're new to the whole Dizzy thing then obviously I'd suggest playing them from the beginning for continuity purposes. But I guarantee the one you'll love the most will be Magicland.
